New World Coffee from Acatenango, Guatemala
- Altitude: 2,100 Meters Above Sea Level (6,900 feet)
- Process: Black Honey
- Notes: Tangerine, Caramel, Chocolate
Coffee production in Guatemala began in the 18th century, and gained prominence as immigrants arrived in the 1800s. The country’s main crop, indigo, was failing, and newcomers were encouraged to grow coffee. The government-backed program was successful, and by the late 1800s, the country was one of the world’s major coffee producers. Today, coffee production still supports many small communities, including El Guachupilin, where this coffee was grown.
This coffee was grown at high altitudes in the southwest of Guatemala, near the Acatenango Volcano. The nutrient-dense, volcanic soil creates notes of chocolate, caramel, and tangerine. The beans were processed using the full ‘black honey’ method, imparting a pronounced sweetness, as only the ripest, most sugar-rich cherries are selected.
